A Kansas City, Kansas man, identified as Luis Ponce-Lopez, has been indicted by a federal grand jury after authorities discovered nearly six kilograms of suspected heroin in his possession. Ponce-Lopez, a Mexican citizen, was charged in a two-count indictment filed in Kansas City, Missouri on April 2, following an incident that occurred on March 24.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the original criminal complaint, witnesses observed Ponce-Lopez dumping a black trash bag in a field after being involved in a traffic accident. The discarded bag was found to contain several packages wrapped in black paper, a silver thermos, and two clear tubs, which collectively held around 5.7 kilograms of suspected heroin.

In addition to the drug discovery, a search of Ponce-Lopez's vehicle led to the confiscation of a Dan Wesson 10mm semi-automatic handgun. The federal indictment against him includes charges of possessing heroin with the intent to distribute and possessing a firearm in connection with drug-trafficking activities.

As stated by authorities, the charges presented in the indictment are accusations and not proof of guilt. The case will proceed to a federal trial jury for a determination of guilt or innocence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon E. Gibson is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the Jackson County Drug Task Force.

The investigation and subsequent indictment of Ponce-Lopez are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by strengthening relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. The initiative focuses on building trust within communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, establishing targeted enforcement priorities, and assessing outcomes.
