A Springfield, Missouri man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly assaulting a postal worker. Courtney J. Ellis, 45, faces charges in a one-count indictment for assaulting an employee of the U.S. Postal Service during their official duties. This indictment replaces a felony criminal complaint initially filed on June 23, 2025.

According to an affidavit supporting the original complaint, the incident occurred on June 18, 2025. Ellis is accused of striking the victim on the head with a wooden board while mail was being delivered to his address. The victim was reportedly wearing a USPS uniform and driving a marked USPS delivery vehicle at the time of the attack. Afterward, Ellis allegedly shouted that the postal worker did not belong in the neighborhood and continued to threaten him until he left.

The charges are accusations and not evidence of guilt; evidence must be presented to a federal trial jury responsible for determining guilt or innocence.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall D. Eggert is prosecuting this case, which was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Springfield Police Department.
