The match between Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake ended in a 1-1 draw, characterized by chaos, intensity, and emotion. Facing a long-time rival with former players who have left their mark on the club added to the heightened emotions of the game. The match featured goals, saves, a red card, and a determined Sporting KC.

The lineup saw several changes, with 17-year-old defender Ian James starting for Sporting KC.

Lineup: John Pulskamp, Tim Liebold (Logan Ndenbe 46’), Ian James, Jansen Miller, Khiry Shelton, Memo Rodríguez, Jacob Barlett, Manu García, Daniel Salloi (Shapi Suleymanov 46’), Santi Muñoz (Mason Toye 77’), Erik Thommy (Andrew Brody 89’).

Substitutes: Dejan Joveljić, Stephen Afrifa, Ryan Schewe.

Both teams sought early goals. Sporting came close while RSL defended well. In the ninth minute, RSL committed a foul against captain Erik Thommy in the penalty area; however, no penalty was awarded as the game continued. Sporting attempted long passes to catch RSL off guard while RSL aimed to connect with William Agada in the penalty area.

In the 16th minute, Thommy’s shot was caught by the goalkeeper. Muñoz followed with his own attempt but again found the goalkeeper ready. Just before halftime, former Sporting captain Johnny Russell headed in a goal for RSL but refrained from celebrating.

Sporting emerged after halftime seeking an equalizer. Despite several dangerous touches from Suleymanov, Muñoz and Thommy in the 54th minute they could not score until Garcia set up Thommy for an unstoppable shot that leveled the match at one apiece in the 59th minute.

Matches between these rivals often bring intense energy and aggressive plays resulting in yellow cards for both teams. A controversial second yellow card left Davis sent off leaving Sporting to play with ten men.

Despite being down a player Sporting maintained control with solid defense led by Ian James’ mature performance and key saves from John Pulskamp. A crucial clearance by Jansen Miller highlighted their defensive efforts in closing minutes.

The match concluded at 1-1 with Sporting controlling possession towards end securing a home point. They now travel to Colorado to face Rapids on July 4 at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park. Fans can follow all action via Es.SportingKC.com.
