In the 16th minute, Thommy’s shot was caught by the goalkeeper. Muñoz followed with his own attempt but again found the goalkeeper ready. Just before halftime, former Sporting captain Johnny Russell headed in a goal for RSL but refrained from celebrating.
Sporting emerged after halftime seeking an equalizer. Despite several dangerous touches from Suleymanov, Muñoz and Thommy in the 54th minute they could not score until Garcia set up Thommy for an unstoppable shot that leveled the match at one apiece in the 59th minute.
Matches between these rivals often bring intense energy and aggressive plays resulting in yellow cards for both teams. A controversial second yellow card left Davis sent off leaving Sporting to play with ten men.
Despite being down a player Sporting maintained control with solid defense led by Ian James’ mature performance and key saves from John Pulskamp. A crucial clearance by Jansen Miller highlighted their defensive efforts in closing minutes.
