Sporting Kansas City will play against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place on April 17, with kickoff scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Central Time. The match can be streamed on Apple TV and will also air locally on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.
This game marks Sporting’s return to Major League Soccer regular-season action after their elimination from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup earlier this week. The team now shifts its focus entirely to league play as they prepare for a challenging matchup against the current Supporters’ Shield leaders.
The Vancouver Whitecaps have started their season strongly, leading the Western Conference with a record of six wins and one loss. They currently top the league in goals scored, expected goals, and have allowed the fewest expected goals against so far this season.
Sporting has played only one Friday regular-season match in the last five years—a win over Colorado Rapids last July. However, recent history favors Vancouver; Sporting has lost its last four meetings with them, including two defeats during the previous season at both BC Place and Sporting Park. Despite holding an all-time series lead of 12-10-5 over Vancouver, Sporting has managed just one victory in their past nine encounters since 2021.
This year marks a new era for Sporting under President of Soccer Operations David Lee and head coach Raphael Wicky. The club enters with an average squad age of just 23.8 years—second youngest in Major League Soccer—and features only one player over thirty years old.
Looking ahead, Sporting is set to host “Soccer Capital Summer” at Sporting Park during June and July, coinciding with FIFA World Cup festivities. This event will include watch parties for more than twenty World Cup matches as well as concerts and other fan experiences free to attend by advance registration through SeatGeek.
In addition, club co-owner Cliff Illig and former defender Matt Besler are scheduled for induction into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame on August 16 during a ceremony at Sporting Park.
