Sporting Kansas City drew with Columbus Crew in a match marked by tactical adjustments and key individual performances. Head coach Raphael Wicky highlighted his team’s collective effort and resilience, particularly after mistakes led to challenging moments.
Wicky stated that his halftime message was straightforward due to the team’s strong first-half showing. “The message in the first half was easy to give, because I think the boys played really well, were courageous, were pressing high in moments, were very compact, and were just working as a team, as a unit. In possession, out of possession. That’s what I’m asking them to do. Then these mistakes happened, right? That’s football, that’s the way things happen. What was important was the reaction, not to have their heads down, and they reacted well. At halftime, we told them, ‘Hey, let’s keep doing what we did, we did this really well, and we’re going to turn this game around.’ That was the message. I think, overall, it was a very interesting, intensive game. We turned the game around. Columbus is a very good team that has played together for many years, who is difficult to play. I think our boys did really well.”
Discussing Calvin Harris’ role on the field and his speed as an asset for Sporting Kansas City’s attack strategy throughout the match against Columbus Crew SC (https://www.mlssoccer.com/clubs/columbus-crew-sc/), Wicky said: “I think it’s important to alternate in playing short, playing in between the lines, and playing over in the spaces. Then every player has strengths, and Calvin Harris is fast, he’s vertical, and he can threaten and hurt other teams with these strengths… It wasn’t only Calvin (Harris), I think Jayden Reid also had a lot of runs in behind. That’s what Calvin does, and we’re happy.”
On responding to adversity during matches—a theme present since preseason—Wicky emphasized teamwork: “I think that’s the message since day one… before we talk tactics… it’s being together… helping each other… fighting… leaving everything on the field.” He noted improvement even after last week’s loss.
Goalkeeper John Pulskamp’s penalty save late in the match helped secure a point for Sporting KC at home against Columbus Crew SC (https://www.mlssoccer.com/clubs/columbus-crew-sc/). Wicky praised Pulskamp’s composure: “I think this is a really good performance from John and helps him to grow… The most important thing is the reaction… His reaction – and the team’s reaction – was really positive…”
Regarding formation choices during matches versus focusing on system labels like 4-1-4-1 or 5-2-3 seen today (https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/mls-formations-explained), Wicky explained: “The system itself is not so important. It’s really how we want to defend…” He stressed that player movement within those structures matters more than strict adherence to formations.
Forward Dejan Joveljic scored twice but expressed mixed feelings about not securing all three points at home: “I’m very happy because I scored two goals. Unfortunately we didn’t win all three points but one point in front of our fans good enough…”
Joveljic credited Pulskamp’s penalty save as pivotal: “Actually that save gave us the wings. So hopefully for next game we are going to fly.”
Reflecting on lessons learned from previous games’ outcomes—such as last week’s defeat—Joveljic observed growth within himself and teammates when handling setbacks during matches.
Referee Sergii Demianchuk clarified through MLS Pool Reporter questions that video review led him to award Columbus Crew SC (https://www.mlssoccer.com/clubs/columbus-crew-sc/) a penalty after determining Sporting Kansas City’s Ian James committed a tripping foul inside his own area.
Overall both coaching staff and players pointed toward ongoing development within Sporting Kansas City’s squad as they prepare for future fixtures.
