Sporting Kansas City head coach Raphael Wicky said on Apr. 15 that his team was not prepared for the challenge they faced in their recent cup match, resulting in a disappointing loss to a lower division opponent.

The result is significant as it highlights the challenges higher-tier teams can face when competing against opponents from lower divisions, especially in knockout tournaments where intensity and desire often play a key role.

Wicky said, “It’s a really hard one, because we were not ready. That’s the truth. We were not ready in the first half for this fight and that is hard to swallow because cup games are fight games first. And against lower division teams, you have to be ready mentally to accept the fight.” He emphasized that his team’s struggles were less about tactics and more about losing individual battles: “We didn’t win duels, we didn’t win second balls, we didn’t win 1v1 duels. They were way more aggressive than we were.”

Reflecting on his message to players after the game, Wicky said he told them exactly what he had just shared with reporters: “I told them exactly those words and nothing else, nothing more.” He also pointed out that every player needed to reflect on why they were outperformed: “That’s a question every individual has to ask themselves. Why were they more hungry? Why did they want it more? Because I believe it was that, first and foremost.” Wicky added that further discussions would take place as the team prepares for its next match.

Forward Taylor Calheira described similar feelings following the loss: “Obviously it’s just disappointing, the result in general — not just the first half, but the whole game. I just think they just came out with more fire and more desire.” Calheira spoke from experience about how underdog teams approach these matches: “Their dream is probably to play in MLS so when you get a chance to play against an MLS team, you play like it’s the World Cup Final.” Looking ahead after coming into the game at halftime with Sporting trailing by two goals, Calheira said of his team’s effort: “It definitely hurts, but we’ll keep working.”

The outcome underscores how critical mentality can be during high-stakes cup competitions between teams from different leagues.
