Sporting Kansas City II drew 2-2 with Tacoma Defiance on May 4 at Victory Field, marking their third result in four matches. Shane Donovan scored both goals for Sporting KC II, earning his first professional brace. Tacoma secured an extra point by winning the post-match penalty shootout.
The match began with Tacoma applying early pressure and nearly scoring in the ninth minute before Jack Francka blocked a headed attempt. Goalkeeper Jack Kortkamp made several key saves to keep Sporting KC II level in the first half. Blaine Mabie took Kansas City’s first shot in the 18th minute, but it sailed over the bar.
Donovan opened the scoring for Sporting KC II in the 40th minute by heading home a cross from Zane Wantland. However, Cody Baker equalized for Tacoma just before halftime with a shot into the top corner and received a yellow card shortly after for unsporting conduct.
Tacoma took a brief lead in the second half when Osaze De Rosario scored after dribbling past defenders. Head coach Lee Tschantret responded with substitutions that brought Daniel Russo and Tega Ikoba onto the field. Donovan then tied the game again in the 63rd minute by volleying home after Russo’s blocked attempt fell to him inside the box.
Despite late chances from both sides, neither team could find a winner during regulation time. In penalties, Tacoma goalkeeper Noah Newman made two saves to secure his team an additional point from kicks from the spot.
Sporting Kansas City II will play Ventura County FC next at Victory Field on Wednesday, May 6.
