Sporting Kansas City managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake in a match held at Children’s Mercy Park. The game saw Sporting Kansas City, with a record of 5-10-5, face off against Real Salt Lake, which stands at 5-10-4. Johnny Russell gave RSL the lead just before halftime by scoring against his former club. Erik Thommy equalized for Sporting KC in the 59th minute with an impressive shot from distance.

Manu Garcia assisted Thommy’s goal, marking his ninth assist this season and maintaining an active streak of assists in four consecutive matches. This performance places him third in Major League Soccer (MLS) for assists.

Sporting KC will next travel to face the Colorado Rapids on July 4th. The match is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. CT kickoff and will be available on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.

During the match, Nelson Palacio nearly scored early on for RSL, but John Pulskamp made several key saves throughout the game to keep Sporting KC in contention. Santiago Munoz had a chance for Sporting KC in the first half but was denied by goalkeeper Rafael Cabral.

Russell’s goal came from an Alexandros Katranis cross, and he chose not to celebrate out of respect for his former fans. In response, Kerry Zavagnin’s team improved their play after halftime.

In the second half, Thommy scored with assistance from Garcia, bringing Sporting KC level with RSL once more. Despite being reduced to ten men after Jake Davis received a red card, Sporting managed to hold onto their draw thanks to defensive efforts from Jansen Miller and others.

The match concluded with both teams sharing points as they continue through their respective MLS seasons.
