Sporting Kansas City head coach Raphael Wicky said on Apr. 18 that he saw positives in his team’s performance despite a 3-0 defeat against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Wicky addressed the challenges faced by his young squad, highlighting their effort and growth during the match.

The comments come as Sporting Kansas City continues to integrate new and young players into its lineup, with several making their first starts in Major League Soccer. This development phase is seen as important for the club’s future, even though results have been difficult.

Wicky said, “Of course the first half didn’t go the way I wanted. But overall, I have to say. I can take positives from this performance. I told this to the players. They don’t see this right now, but as a coach, I can do something with this performance.” He emphasized that although conceding three goals early was tough mentally for his team, he did not see them giving up: “I saw a team who kept working…the message at halftime was, let’s try to win the second half.” Wicky also spoke about individual performances including Kwaku Agyabeng and Cielo Tschantret making progress in challenging circumstances.

Midfielder Manu Garcia echoed these sentiments about finding positives despite setbacks: “It’s a 3-0 loss. So it’s difficult to take positives from it…At least today we can see something to work with and some positive to take.” Garcia discussed overcoming recent injuries and how mistakes impacted results but noted improvement in attitude: “I feel like we have some courage and we have some heart that we should show tonight.” He also reflected on helping younger teammates adjust: “I’m trying to help them…When results are not going well…I think today, the young guys did great.”

Both Wicky and Garcia stressed that confidence is key for turning around form as they continue developing talent within Sporting Kansas City’s roster. The focus remains on building consistency while supporting less experienced players through challenging periods.

Looking ahead, Wicky expressed belief in his team’s direction: “I believe 100% that we will get there where we want and we will go to the right direction.” The club aims for steady improvement as it works through injuries and lineup changes.
