Sporting Kansas City and the Seattle Sounders FC played to a 1-1 draw at Sporting Park on May 2 in a Western Conference match. Both teams’ leading scorers contributed goals, with Paul Rothrock scoring early for Seattle and Dejan Joveljic equalizing for Sporting KC.
The result is notable as it extended the Sounders’ unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer to seven matches, while also giving Sporting Kansas City their first point in seven games across all competitions. The match saw both sides create several scoring opportunities but neither was able to break the deadlock after the early goals.
Rothrock opened the scoring just two minutes into the game with his fourth goal of the season. Shortly after, Jesus Ferreira nearly doubled Seattle’s lead when his shot hit the crossbar. In response, Joveljic capitalized on a misplayed pass from Cristian Roldan and scored from outside the penalty area in the 18th minute, ending both Sporting’s scoreless streak of 350 minutes and Seattle’s road shutout streak of 420 minutes.
Sporting KC goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland made his club debut against his former team, making key saves throughout the second half. Notable chances came from Shapi Suleymanov for Kansas City and Kalani Kossa-Rienzi for Seattle, but both goalkeepers were able to keep their teams level.
The match featured a total of 27 shots by Seattle, marking one of their highest totals in regular season history. Despite this pressure, Cleveland kept out several late attempts including efforts by Ferreira and substitute Taylor Calheira.
Looking ahead, Sporting Kansas City will travel to face Portland Timbers on May 9 at Providence Park as they seek their first win in nine matches at home.
