Sporting Kansas City and The Victory Project unveiled the “Soccer United” heart sculpture by local art teacher Dennis Stanton at Sporting Park, according to an April 24 announcement. The installation is part of this year’s Parade of Hearts, a public art initiative in the Kansas City region.
The Parade of Hearts aims to celebrate creativity, culture, and compassion through heart-shaped sculptures displayed across the area. This year’s event coincides with the FIFA World Cup coming to North America, which is reflected in Stanton’s design featuring the flags of the three host nations on one side and a soccer player on the other.
Jenn Nussbeck, Executive Director for Parade Of Hearts, said, “These hearts embody artistic excellence and the breadth of the artistic talent from the Kansas City region. The designs show extraordinary diversity, and each unique creation reflects how open our hearts are to one another and to all who visit our region. They are powerful symbols of unity and belonging that showcase the spirit and pride of our region to the world. Locals and visitors alike will not just see art; they will feel the heart of a community.”
A total of 150 heart sculptures have been placed throughout Kansas City this year. Organizers note that this collection covers its largest geographic area yet. Each monument features a new circular shape symbolizing unity along with a keyhole at its center representing openness.
The sculptures will remain on display from April until August before being auctioned off to raise funds for nonprofit organizations. The Parade of Hearts continues its mission by connecting more than 50 cities across two states through public art while promoting tourism, economic growth, community pride, cultural awareness, creativity, and beautification.
