Governor Mike Kehoe has requested a major disaster declaration from President Donald J. Trump to secure federal assistance for areas in Missouri affected by severe storms and tornadoes on May 16. The request includes the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, and six southeast Missouri counties: Cape Girardeau, Iron, New Madrid, Scott, Stoddard, and Wayne.
The storms resulted in seven fatalities and significant damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. Governor Kehoe emphasized the need for rapid federal aid to assist families in rebuilding their lives. “It is abundantly clear that Missouri families need rapid federal assistance to rebuild homes and lives,” he stated.
Joint teams assessed the damage on May 21 and 22. Following this assessment, Governor Kehoe sent a letter requesting FEMA Individual Assistance for the affected regions. This assistance would cover temporary housing, repairs, replacement of damaged belongings, vehicles, and other expenses.
In response to ongoing needs in St. Louis City, Governor Kehoe announced the activation of up to 41 members of the Missouri National Guard’s 35th Engineer Brigade to help with debris removal starting May 28. A National Guard Liaison Officer has been assisting local officials since May 20.

Preliminary Damage Assessment teams will begin reviewing damage on May 28 as part of efforts to seek federal Public Assistance for affected jurisdictions. If approved, this would allow reimbursement for emergency response costs and infrastructure repairs.
A State of Emergency was first declared by Governor Kehoe on March 14 through Executive Order 25-19 due to anticipated severe weather conditions.
