Nearly one in five parents in the Kansas City area have reported their child’s mental health as “fair” or “poor,” according to a survey conducted by Children’s Mercy Kansas City. Additionally, 11% of parents noted their child felt “sad” or “hopeless.” In response, local hospitals and health centers are working to prepare parents to address the increasing mental health issues among youths.
In Johnson County, more than a dozen parents with children facing mental health challenges meet weekly to share experiences, brainstorm solutions, and at times, simply express their frustrations about home life.
These parents often encounter similar challenges, such as monitoring their children’s social media and managing their social and academic lives, all while handling their own mental health concerns.
Jordan Boux, a team leader for children and family services with the Johnson County Mental Health Center, highlighted the challenges parents face. “When parents’ own life doesn’t have balance, it’s not going to be easy to then take care of others,” she said.
The group meetings aim to provide a support network for parents navigating these complex issues.
