A Kansas City man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for illegal possession of a firearm. Irvin M. Swim, 35, was charged following an incident earlier this month where he allegedly stole a firearm from a vehicle in Independence, Missouri.

The indictment replaces an earlier federal criminal complaint filed against Swim on July 7, 2025. According to the affidavit supporting the original complaint, a male citizen reported that his vehicle was entered and a 9mm handgun was stolen. A female witness claimed she saw the suspect in the vehicle and that he pointed a gun at her.

Officers from the Independence Police Department later identified Swim as matching the suspect’s description. When officers approached him at a gas station parking lot, Swim fled on foot while holding a firearm. He was eventually apprehended, and officers recovered a Taurus Model PT111 Millenium G2 pistol with ammunition nearby.

Swim has multiple prior felony convictions including four for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone with felony convictions to possess firearms or ammunition.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica L. Jennings is prosecuting the case which was investigated by the Independence Police Department.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations while protecting communities from violent crime.
