The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Apr. 24 that they have selected former Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Woods’ selection adds depth and versatility to the Chiefs’ defensive line, an area often considered crucial for team success. The move comes as part of the team’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its defense for upcoming seasons.
Woods was a three-year contributor at Clemson, appearing in 35 games and starting in 24 of them over his collegiate career. He earned several honors during his time with the Tigers, including Freshman All-American recognition in 2023, Honorable Mention All-ACC as a sophomore, and First-Team All-ACC selection in his final year. Statistically, he recorded 84 tackles, 14.5 tackles-for-loss, five sacks, and two forced fumbles while at Clemson.
At six feet two inches tall and weighing 298 pounds, Woods is noted for combining size with athleticism. According to Pro Football Focus: “Woods offers an ideal blend of size, strength and athleticism, with true scheme versatility. His explosive first step and ability to convert speed to power make him disruptive at the line of scrimmage. If he expands his pass-rush plan, he can turn pressures into more impactful production.” In addition to playing multiple positions along the defensive front—including left defensive tackle (316 snaps), right defensive tackle (114 snaps), nose tackle (47 snaps), left defensive end (37 snaps), and even outside edge-rusher—he also contributed offensively last season by scoring two touchdowns on fifteen offensive snaps.
Woods grew up in Greensboro, Alabama before starring at Thompson High School in Alabaster where he earned state “Player of the Year” honors as a senior and national attention as one of the top-rated defensive linemen according to recruiting services.
Looking ahead, Head Coach Andy Reid may utilize Woods’ skills both defensively and offensively as part of new strategies for the team.
