As technology becomes more common in daily life, concerns about its impact on family relationships and children’s well-being are growing. Dr. Libby Milkovich, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician at Children’s Mercy, described the phenomenon as “technoference,” or the “measurable amount of technology that is interfering with relationships.” She noted that while harmful content such as cyberbullying is often discussed, another significant issue is how digital media can take time away from activities important for mental and physical health. “It’s interrupting organic family connections,” she said.
In response to these challenges, Justin Finn and Molly Kavanagh opened Dozer, an indoor sandbox located in Leawood, Kansas. Their goal was to provide families with a space to spend quality time together away from screens. Kavanagh explained their motivation: “The main goal and purpose (of Dozer) is to reconnect the family and the time that we spend with each other. Bringing a purposeful way to be present and have fun in a very safe environment.”
