The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce announced on April 20 a series of upcoming events and opportunities through its Centurions Leadership Program, including screenings, leadership discussions, advocacy panels, and the opening of Legacy Project applications for local nonprofits.
These initiatives aim to foster community engagement and leadership development across the Kansas City region. The Centurions Leadership Program is focused on preparing emerging leaders to address key civic issues affecting Greater Kansas City.
Among the scheduled events is a special screening of “Land of Opportunity: The Road of Resistance, Part I” with filmmaker Nico Giles. Inspired by Richard Rothstein’s book “The Color of Law,” the documentary examines the impact of urban renewal policies and Highway 71’s development in Kansas City, which displaced more than 10,000 families. Giles will discuss his filmmaking process and lead a conversation about the ongoing effects these policies have on communities.
The Chamber also invites area nonprofits to apply for its annual Legacy Project. Each year, Centurions volunteers select one nonprofit for a project designed to bring lasting benefits to the community. Applications are now open to all area organizations interested in participating.
Other upcoming programs include an information session about the two-year Centurions Leadership Program at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy; a fireside conversation with Mayor Quinton Lucas and City Manager Mario Vasquez reflecting on 100 years since Kansas City’s adoption of its council-manager form of government; a leadership discussion featuring Dr. Rochelle Parker, CEO of Girl Scouts NE Kansas and NW Missouri; an immigration advocacy panel hosted by alumni; and an informal coffee event for reconnection among current members and alumni.
The Chamber said these activities are intended to build awareness around civic opportunities while supporting professional growth within Greater Kansas City’s emerging leaders.
