Federal prisoner sentenced for assaulting nurse at Springfield medical center

A Washington D.C. man was sentenced on April 22 in federal court for assaulting a Bureau of Prisons nurse at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri.

Lawrence C. Boykin, age 72, was serving a sentence from 1991 for convictions related to multiple counts of sodomy on a minor and indecent acts with a minor when the incident occurred. While incarcerated, Boykin verbally abused staff and then threw a food tray at the victim on December 21, 2024. The attack resulted in the nurse suffering a broken nose, laceration, and concussion.

U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool sentenced Boykin to an additional 46 months in prison. This sentence will run consecutively to his previous conviction from 1991 and will be followed by one year of post-release supervision.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney and investigated by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons.
