The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to begin their training camp, with a focus on evaluating their defensive backs. The team currently has 19 players in this group, which is divided into safeties and cornerbacks.

Among the safeties, Deon Bush returns for his fourth season with the Chiefs. Bush played a significant role on special teams last year and made notable contributions during his defensive snaps. Chamarri Conner showed versatility by shifting from safety to slot cornerback last season due to roster changes. His flexibility remains valuable for Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Bryan Cook, a second-round pick in 2022, started all 17 regular-season games in 2024 and is expected to be a starting safety again this year. Mike Edwards returns for another stint with the Chiefs after spending time with other teams last season. Jaden Hicks has an opportunity to step up following Justin Reid’s departure, while Glendon Miller and Major Williams bring potential as newcomers.

In the cornerback category, Trent McDuffie stands out as one of the league’s elite players. He enters his fourth NFL season with high expectations. Nazeeh Johnson aims to build on his progress after recovering from an ACL injury that sidelined him in 2023.

Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson, and Chris Roland-Wallace have also been key contributors in recent seasons. Newcomers like Kristian Fulton and Kevin Knowles add depth to the roster.

The Chiefs traditionally keep ten defensive backs for Week 1 of the regular season. This year’s competition is expected to be intense as players vie for limited spots on the final roster.
