A photograph holds the unique power to capture emotions and tell stories through a single moment. In an exploration of standout images from the 2024-25 season, the Chiefs’ Director of Photography, Steve Sanders, shares insights into his work.

One notable image, ranked as No. 9 in their series, is titled “Even in Defeat.” It captures a poignant scene at Super Bowl LIX where wide receiver Xavier Worthy and wide receiver Hollywood Brown share a moment after the Chiefs’ loss. The photo was taken by Steve Sanders using a Canon EOS R1 with a focal length of 26 mm, an exposure time of 1/500, and an aperture of f/2.8.

Sanders explained the significance behind choosing this photo for their collection: “This was a bad day, but – even when things are going wrong – as a photographer, you still have to do your job. You still have to document history and tell a story. Everything we do revolves around storytelling, so we had to continue to work,” he said. He noted how Worthy’s expression conveyed determination amidst disappointment: “He’s saying something to Hollywood… ‘We’re going to be back.'”

Reflecting on the team spirit depicted in the image, Sanders remarked on Coach Reid’s motto: “‘Come in as teammates, leave as family.’ This is a real family moment,” highlighting the camaraderie between players.

Sanders also addressed the challenges photographers face during emotional moments: “You’re watching these moments happen through your lens… You have to continue to work without stopping to watch the moment.”
