The Kansas City Chiefs held their 13th training camp practice on Wednesday morning as the team continued its preparations for the upcoming NFL season. The session, originally scheduled to take place outdoors, was moved indoors after lightning was detected in the area.

“A little bit of a shift in gears today, but I thought the guys did a pretty good job,” said Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. “I thought they came in and played fast. That was a good thing.”

Wednesday’s practice featured a series of one-on-one drills involving running backs, tight ends, linebackers, and safeties. In pass-protection exercises, players such as tailback Isiah Pacheco and linebacker Nick Bolton stood out. Safety Jaden Hicks and linebackers Cooper McDonald and Leo Chenal also made notable plays during this segment. Chenal managed to break through his blocker to reach the quarterback.

The drills then shifted focus as defensive players were tasked with covering offensive counterparts on passing plays. Nick Bolton broke up a pass while tailback Brashard Smith caught a deep throw along the sideline. Veteran tight end Robert Tonyan made a one-handed catch later in the drill.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes drew attention during a “long drive drill” when he sprinted toward the sideline before throwing across his body to complete a pass downfield. The play highlighted Mahomes’ ability to execute difficult throws even during routine practice sessions.

Coaches placed emphasis on “big red zone” situations by running plays from inside the 30-yard line. Tight end Noah Gray caught a deflected pass over the middle, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton scored near the corner of the end zone, and tailback Elijah Mitchell had a touchdown reception up the seam. Quarterback Bailey Zappe finished this period with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jimmy Holiday.

Several players missed Wednesday’s session due to injury: wide receivers Rashee Rice (groin) and Hollywood Brown (ankle), linebacker Drue Tranquill (back), cornerback Kristian Fulton (knee), and tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring).

The Chiefs are scheduled to return for their 14th training camp practice on Thursday.
