The Kansas City Chiefs began their voluntary offseason training program at the team facility on Apr. 20, marking the start of “Phase 1” in preparation for the upcoming football season.
This phase is important as it allows players to meet with coaches, participate in strength and conditioning activities, and focus on physical rehabilitation before on-field practices begin in mid-May. Unlike previous years when some sessions were held virtually, this year’s program is being conducted entirely at the team’s facilities.
Head Coach Andy Reid said, “We’re fired up to get the guys back in the building. We had a nice turnout today, which I appreciate.” He explained that during this phase, players can attend meetings and lift weights but are not allowed to have coaches present on the field. “There’re no coaches on the field, but the [players] can go out and throw – the receivers and quarterbacks,” Reid said.
Reid also gave an update regarding quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ recovery from a knee injury that ended his 2025 season. “He goes to meetings and he can lift – all of that,” Reid said. “That’s the phase he’s in right now. We’ll just see and play it by ear [in regard to next steps]. He’s doing great, but we have to be smart with this thing.”
The start of Phase 1 coincides with preparations for the NFL Draft, which begins Thursday night at 7 pm Central Time. Reid shared his enthusiasm about working with both returning players and new additions: “I enjoy doing what I’m doing. I feel very privileged and honored to be able to do it,” he said. “I’m around good people, I love the new additions – whether it’s coaches or players – and now we get to bring in some more guys.”
